“I hope to start my lab in Jordan and collaborate with researchers in the UK to deliver better neuroscience courses to Jordanian universities and provide laboratory training. I also aim to advance Alzheimer's disease research in Jordan and the Middle East.”
Meet Dana…
Dana was born and raised in Jordan and is studying Translational Neuroscience at Imperial College London. She completed her undergraduate degree in Medical Neuroscience at the University of Sussex.
Dana spent time as a junior research associate and then at a laboratory investigating the pathological role of tau associated with Alzheimer's disease on the nucleus and nucleolus. Dana coded her results using python and gained an interest in computation and bioinformatics. Dana found this experience extremely fulfilling. Working alongside postdoctoral researchers, Master's students, and PhD students motivated her to pursue postgraduate studies, and apply for a master’s at Imperial College.
Dana has presented her work in many academic spaces. She was invited by the University of Sussex to present her research at the UK Parliament to policymakers and members of parliament. She presented her research findings at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research and the prestigious International Brain Research Organisation's Research World Congress of Neuroscience. Her next research experience will be one where she becomes a published author. Her review paper on the use of gut microbiota as biomarkers to detect the presence of brain tumours and their progression is due to be published.
Dana’s experience in the lab showed her the importance of continuing research into neurological disorders and applying the findings to target disorders of the nervous system. She would like to enrich her research journey by going on to a PhD and becoming a postdoctoral researcher with sufficient knowledge and contributing in the field to become an independent fellow. Allowing that, Dana hopes to start her lab in Jordan and collaborate with researchers in the UK to deliver better neuroscience courses to Jordanian universities and provide laboratory training. She also aims to advance Alzheimer's disease research in Jordan and the Middle East and to become a recognised professor in her field.
Outside of research, Dana is actively involved in promoting the principle of equality, diversity, and inclusion. She spoke at the Global Summit and volunteered at the Black and Minority Ethnic Young People’s Project (BMEYPP), an experience which taught her how to be patient while mentoring young pupils. Dana also proudly represented the school of Life Sciences at the University of Sussex and participated in the Roche diagnostics university mentoring programme. She now represents the School of Medicine as a student recruitment and outreach ambassador at Imperial College London.
