“Through my studies and experiences, I will be able to contribute significantly to the health and education sectors in Gaza and build bridges between British and Palestinian medical students, academics, and professionals. This is particularly significant for me as the number of specialities in epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance is limited in Palestine, and this speciality is among others not offered at academic institutions in the Gaza Strip.”

Meet Hossam…

Hossam was born in the Gaza Strip, Palestine where he also grew up.

He is originally a dentist, and graduated from Al-Azhar University in Gaza before moving to the UK to pursue his master’s degree. Hossam chose MSc. Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Resistance at the University of Glasgow to synthesise his previous academic experience to promote effective research application, health development, and epidemiology in Palestine.

At Al-Azhar University, Hossam invested in dentistry study to advance his understanding of health problems and the epidemiological status of diseases/conditions in the community. As a result, he gained solid knowledge in community health along with statistics and medical research. Hossam also enrolled in many courses that served his intellectual curiosity and plans in health development.

During his undergraduate studies, Hossam has been involved in various volunteering and development projects during the last four years, and played a substantial role in establishing a national research association besides participating with different associations, including the International Medical Students Research Association (IMedRA), Palestinian Association of Dental Students (PADS), and HultPrize Foundation. Hossam seized this experience and network to engage with key community and decision-making challenges. In addition, Hossam participated actively in the scientific community and published nine scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and four conference participations as posters, through which he spotted the light on important health issues in Palestine and Globally.

Through these academic and community engagements, along with his experience now studying at the University of Glasgow, Hossam will be able to contribute significantly to the health and education sectors in Gaza and build bridges between British and Palestinian medical students, academics, and professionals.
